Search Engine Optimisation

Ok, you have a website.

The internet is big, really big. Now just imagine you have a website, a beautiful, lovingly crafted personal masterpiece. It's out there on the web and anyone from anywhere in the world (that has an internet connection) can find it and marvel at your creation. Your website and its vision are now part of the world wide web and your plan of commercial triumph, insightful blogging or even world domination is ready and waiting for your unexpecting but sure to be loving, public.

How do search engines help ?

If there are a trillion websites out there and it’s growing every minute, how will people find you? By chance? Simple luck? I'm afraid not.
This is where search engines come in. Early on it was realised that the internet was way too big to just find stuff by clicking around. Search engines became the solution to the problem. They spend their entire time racing over the internet, checking out just about every website and its web pages in the vast cosmos of cyberspace. As they do their work (it's called indexing) they push information back to more computers who study and compare and using secret recipes for analysis and comparison, rank these pages in order of their relevance to a billion different key words.

And then...

All of that work done, they wait expectantly for you and I and others to go to the search engines website and (you guessed it) SEARCH !
Now when you enter a word or two or even five into a search engine form, that search engine has one priority: to as quickly as possible pull back web pages that will best match the small hints you are giving. Not easy and it's actually amazing how well search engines do this.

So where does Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) come into this?

SEO is the art and craft of making your web site search engine friendly to give you the best possible chance of ranking highly for searches that suit your site. At Website Never Sleep, we have long experience of helping, structuring, tweaking and massaging websites so that search engines will examine your site and decide real quick that your site is fantastic for people searching for, well, whatever it is you are trying to sell!

Is it important ?

Does SEO give you an advantage ? Yes it does. It gives you a big advantage over sites that are not search engine friendly. So why doesn’t everyone do it? Well the simple answer is, it’s complicated. SEO, despite what some sales people will tell you, is not easy and not straightforward. There are many levels of effort and the results are not always immediate. The truth is though that to invest in a website and not at the very least have your site audited for SEO is very risky. The web is big and no matter how great your site is, if it's not designed with search engines in mind it could be lost to the world forever!
